Oona Doherty

Oona Studied at The London School Of Contemporary Dance, University of Ulster and LABAN London. She has a BA Honours and Post Graduate in Contemporary Dance Studies. She has been performing Dance Theatre internationally since 2010 with Companies such as: TRASH (NL) Abbattoir Ferme (BE) Veronika Riz (IT) Emma Martin/ United Fall (ROI) Enda Walsh & Landmark Productions (ROI). Oona’s solo work Hope Hunt and the Ascension into Lazarus was the winner of the 2017 Total Theatre Dance Award at the Edinburgh Fringe, the 2016 Dublin Tiger Fringe Festival Best Performer Award. She is one of Aerowaves 2017 selected artists. Oona is a Prime Cut Productions REVEAL Artist, Maison De La Danse Associate Artist 2017 and was The MAC Theatre Belfast HATCH Artist 2016. Oona’s most recent works are Hard to be Soft – A Belfast Prayer which topped The Guardian’s list of the best dance shows of 2019 and Lady Magma, to be shown at Dublin Dance Festival 2020.

Irish Modern Dance Theatre commissioned Oona to create Almost Blue in 2019 when it premiered at the Cork Midsummer Festival and was performed at the Echo Echo Festival of Dance and Movement.

Merce Cunningham

Cunningham was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his seventy-year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of our time. Through much of his life, he was also one of the greatest American dancers. With an artistic career distinguished by constant innovation, Cunningham expanded the frontiers not only of dance, but also of contemporary visual and performing arts. His collaborations with artistic innovators from every creative discipline have yielded an unparalleled body of American dance, music, and visual art.

Over the course of his career, Cunningham choreographed more than 150 dances and over 800 “Events.” Dancers who trained with Cunningham and have gone on to form their own companies include Paul Taylor, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Karole Armitage, Foofwa d’Immobilité, and Jonah Bokaer. 

Irish Modern Dance Theatre works with the Merce Cunninghamn Trust to reproduce works such as Night Wandering, Totem Ancestor and Solo from Second Hand.
