Cunningham at Light House

The Irish premiere of  dance documentary 'Cunningham' is at Light House Cinema, Smithfield, Dublin on March 10th at 6.30pm, followed by a Q&A in Light House with director Alla Kovgan and Irish Modern Dance Theatre's Artistic Director, John Scott.

A cinematic experience 7 years in the making about legendary American dancer and

choreographer, Merce Cunningham, created through weaving together his  iconic dances and never-before-seen archival treasures between 1942 and 1972 - an era of risk and discovery for Merce and his collaborators, composer John Cage, Andy Warhol and visual artist Robert Rauschenberg. The film features several Merce Cunningham dancers who work with Irish Modern Dance Theatre including Ashley Chen, Cheryl Therrien, Valda Setterfield and Julie Cunningham.

“Less a case of cloud gazing so much as cloud bursting, Cloud Study brings the thunder, delivering a downpour full of powerful and mesmerising moments... Throughout, the chemistry between Yusuf and Ataya is exquisite, as is their ownership of  the space, be they combative or cohering around  complementary or conflicting patterns" -

“I was astonished when I heard John Scott first. His voice reverberates through space like a clear shot of lightening... Scott deconstructs the opera form, not with the erudition of a post-modern arts practitioner, but with the visceral shamanic passion of a true artist" - Michael Harding, Irish Playwright
